The objective of the project is to increase the productivity and competitiveness of locally produced rice and cattle rising in order to improve food security, revenues and employment in rural and peri-urban areas and consequently the livelihood of the communities. The project strategy will target the development and the dissemination of appropriate technologies that can mitigate the impact of climate change effects on rice and endangered species. In particular, the project will assist lowland rice farming communities establish large-scale participatory and evolving farmer learning platforms to promote the development, demonstration and widespread adoption of improved rice varieties including NERICA varieties and cattle rising and post-harvest technologies. The project will adopt a market-driven approach coupled with improved production and utilization of rice and cattle rising that aim to empower rural communities with basic production, utilization and marketing skills that will enhance their ability to engage with markets in a more sustainable and stable manner. The project will also promote both appropriate anti-erosive soil management techniques, low cost post-harvest technologies; environmental impact assessment, community-based participatory monitoring that will ensure continuality and transfer of knowledge that will serve as best practice area. The project proposal will strengthen community participation in the identification and formulation of the full project design that will bring about ownership. This will also address the current food security that is looming in these two communities and the protection of endangered species.
