Project Description
Project Description
The planning grant will see to identify the most appropriate type of coconut species- disease resilience and fastest growth rate suitable for the Bahamas. Identification of species which ensure that the costal erosion does not continue after replanting of the Coconut Palm trees. Further the process will identify appropriate manufacturing and management strategies to ensure sustainability after project implementation phase. Integration of a component of restoration/rehabilitation of the eroded coastal areas impacted giving a more focused land degradation component to address the matter of erosion and how it has affected the coconut grove. Further, the project seeks to address this in the areas being looked at for restoration and replanting of coconut trees. Stakeholder meetings will be held with the community to discuss and identify the needs of the project and the uses of the coconut inclusive of the agro processing aspect. SAHMA and the community will meet with Bahamas Agriculture and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) to identify business strategies suitable for the community based management scheme.
