The project on strengthening biodiversity conservation through community based tourism in the lower Sanaga river seeks to raise awareness on threatened birds and mammals species of wetland and forest biodiversity and, and to valorize eco-tourism as an alternative income generation activity for a local community, that will promote the values of this rich biodiversity The project aims to (1) To evaluate the biodiversity value and potential in view of developing a marketing strategy that will promote community based eco-tourism in order to conserve biodiversity by 2010, (2) To train and equip local resource persons including management committee on identified skill gaps and materials on income generating activities during non-touristic season by 2010. The project is community driven and Co-managed by two local Common initiative groups empowered by previous projects. Participatory biodiversity assessment, inventory and documentation of biodiversity richness and eco-tourist potential, improvement of basic eco-tourism infrastructure, provision of equipment and publicity material, training of at least 20 tour guides and agents for the target community and environs, development of a marketing and participatory management plan for identified eco-tourists sites and the development of friendly livelihood activities (beekeeping, snail framing and pig farming) are some of the key outcomes.
