Project Description
Project Description
This project aims to intervene in a fishing community where the fishers are experiencing a declining inshore fisheries and where livelihoods are threatened. The project will build on the lessons learned from an experimental reef ball project along the south coast of Barbados which proved that reef balls can serve as the basis for an increase in fish population and diversity over time. The project objectives are to: (i) establish three to five reef ball garden areas in Oistins Bay as a means of creating habitat for fish which will help to build back the fish population in the Bay; (ii) identify and develop alternative livelihoods for the fishers of Oistins Bay, in particular women; (iii) implement an Environmental Stewardship Programme for the Bay which incorporates an environmental monitoring programme; and (iv) increase public awareness among various communities, including young children and young adults on the importance of a healthy marine environment. Project activities will include the: Establishment of Reef Ball Gardens; Identification and Implementation of Alternative Livelihoods; Advocacy; and Public Awareness.
