Bio-diversity

The project site is located on a 76-hectare plot of land in Mukim Merchang, Marang District, Terengganu, made available by the State Government of Terengganu, Malaysia. When completed, the project would result in the establishment of Malaysia s first ever mega-comprehensive and mega-consolidated Biodiversity Botanical Garden, besides housing a living gene-bank of the various terrestrial and aquatic flora found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. The SGP Malaysia financial component of the project (amounting to RM160,000) would be exclusively utilized for the construction and maintenance of nurseries, the collection of seeds from all over Malaysia and the cultivation and safeguarding of the seedlings, while all the other costs of the project (amounting to RM22,000,000) would be covered by the grantee through the State Government of Terengganu. The active involvement of the local communities in the project would also include the local fisherfolk, who cannot undertake their normal fishing activities, especially during the monsoonal months, when it would provide them with an alternative source of income generation. As part of the project, the local communities would be trained and their capacities built in the identification, collection and cultivation of seedlings, besides raising their awareness and recognition of the significance of plant biodiversity, natural resources and ecosystems.
