Water resources policy and administrative management

The project aims to improve the capacity of the fishermen community to sustainably manage and use the Hawassa Lake fishery and aquatic biodiversity resources and thereby in short and long run to maximize the socio-economic benefits obtained from its resources and contribute to the local and global environmental well-being. Activities to be undertaken in this project include establishing binding by-laws and internal regulations that govern sustainable fishing (mesh-size and number, boat number, rest time, etc); generating alternative income source for fishermen whose livelihood is largely reliant on the fishery resource by constructing Sidama cultural tukuls for recreational service; beautifying and reorganizing the main fishing land site of the Lake and the filleting house owned the Association through plantation of fruit, indigenous trees as well as reorganize the filleting house to make it operational; cleaning up the fish landing, fish filleting and other associated sites through preparing and implementing solid waste management strategy of the Association; supplying quality fish products to the society; and strengthening the fishermen community in sustainable livelihood improvement, fishery resources management (including temporal and spatial area closure) and utilization through training, awareness creation and other capacity building interventions.
