Bio-diversity

The project area lies in the nothern most of the Kruger National Park bordering upon Zimbabwe & Mozambique.Bounded by the Limpopo river in the north, Luvuvu River in the south and Mutale River in the west, the area is known for its high biodiversity. The area which is a contractual park is co-managed by the Makukeke community and the Kruger National Park through a Joint Management Board comprising of members of the community and of the KNP, for the purpose of conservation and related eco tourism development aimed to uplift the livelihoods of the Makuleke people. The project is aimed at building capacity of the Makuleke community through job creation training and capacity building so that they are able to participate equally with the Scientist of the KNP in the the day to day conservation management of the Makuleke region. In order to achieve this, the project will be enabling the Makuleke community to take part very strongly in the redrafting of the Master Plan of the Makuleke region in a way that will: 1) intergrate the management of the wetlands and floodplains declared as as Ramsar site, 2) the removal of all the dilapidated and unwanted fences in the Makuleke region as labour force. 3) the project is also aimed at assisting the community for economical self-reliance and self sufficiency and the cultural and social well being of the members of the Association and their dependants through eco-tourism development, or any other lawful businesses or activities that will be compatible with the conservation of biodiversity in the Makuleke region
