Bio-diversity

The project takes place in the Tomorri National Park, a site rich in natural and cultural values dating back to prehistoric times. Today in addition to natural and biodiversity values the mountain is well known for its annual pilgrimage at the Bektashi teqe situated at 1,600 meters altitude. The number of visitors in such event is in thousands creating a potential problem for the fragile alpine ecosystem but at the same time it represents a good chance of introducing elements of sound environmental friendly management of visitor load and promotion of other park values. The initiative is in accordance with the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action plan. This will be achieved through public awareness activities, participation of local communities in decision-making, survey of the social and economic aspects of the population, zoning of the environmentally problematic areas, and identification of mitigation measures.
