The Women`s Committee of Saleaumua would like to embark on a marine farming activity that will provide benefits to their community. The proposed project of sea urchin farming is an activity that is promoted by the Fisheries Division as an alternative income generating opportunity as well as restocking of valuable resources or restoraton of depleted or threatened fisheries. This shellfish is found in our lagoonal area and was fished for subsistence purposes by our community. However over the years, this shellfish has not been very common in our lagoon, most likely because of over-fishing and natural events such as cyclones and changing weather patterns. Objectives; To create and support women`s community opportunities for the Congregationl Christian Church women`s group of Saleaumua To reate income generating opportunities for the community To enhance skills of women in the areas of fisheries conservation To balance the utilization of resources and conservation through restocking of sea urchin It is anticipated that the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries will provide full technical support to the CCC`s Womens Committee of Saleaumua *****PROJECT UPDATE: The grantee s project had been delayed due to Fisheries advised that they no longer have in stock the sea urchin which was originally the purpose of the project. Currently the proponents are working with MNREM Marine Unit to refocus the project on addressing activities within the current MPA in which the village is part of. Secretariat is preparing MOA Amendment once MNREM & Community finalize the marine focus for the project. *****
