Project Description
Project Description
Momi region, Hadibo District is located in eastern Socotra. The region is a plateau overlooking the ocean. The landscape is rocky with undulating hills intersected with plains. The plains are rich in Grass and Bush land. Water is sacred resource in the region impacting human and animals. In this area there exists neither water spring nor underground water (Tube well) that can provide local communities with domestic water use for humans and animals hence communities relay on rain water harvest in artificially made water pools (cisterns or Karif ). Communities work very hard to establish water security as mean of improving their livelihood and sanitation. This project aimed to help communities building 45 water cisterns with total holding capacity of 3,950cubic meters. Project beneficiaries are 137 families with total population of 865 inhabitants. The project is supporting community initiative for Boswellia elongata (325 trees). Planting of Frankincense trees is for conservation and sustainable use purposes. There are seven species of Frankincense plant species most of them are threatened due to over exploitation and over grazing. The project will target community need from water and initiate wider communities participation is a recovery programme for the species and other tree species in the Momi region.
