Project Description
Project Description
Mayhah region, Qalancia District is located in western Socotra. It s known to be the driest part of Socotra Island. In this area there exists neither water spring nor underground water (Tube well) that can provide local communities with domestic water use for humans and animals hence communities relay on rain water harvest in artificially made water pools (cisterns or Karif ). Communities work very hard to establish water security as mean of improving their livestock productivity, livelihood and sanitation. This project aimed to help communities building 35 water cisterns with total holding capacity of 7,870 cubic meters. Project beneficiaries are 236 families with total population of 1684 inhabitants. The project is supporting community initiative for Aloe cultivation for conservation and sustainable use purposes as medicinal plant on Socotra. Also for establishing the first ever set aside area for grazing management, refuge for endangered endemic plant and tree species (Miruae Socotrana).
