Project Description
The project will be implemented by the Mombasa Kilindini Community Forest Association (MOKIFA) CFA, CLARION, NatureCom Group and two community based organizations Brain Youth Group and Kisauni Environmental Project working in partnership. The proposed project has the overall objective Provide for the sustainable use of the Mombasa County Mangrove forest while ensuring related biodiversity is protected to improve its integrity, function and productivity covers mangrove forests found within Tudor, Port Reitz and Mtwapa (Mombasa side) creeks. The specific objectives of the project are; i) sensitize and mobilize local communities, relevant government agencies and other stakeholders on the development of the Mombasa County Mangrove Forest Management Plan, ii) Enhance understanding of the Mombasa County Mangrove Forest status and iii) support the development of the Mombasa county Participatory Mangrove Management Plan. The anticipated project results are i) improved management of Mombasa County peri-urban mangrove forests, ii) development of Participatory Forest Management Plan with designated different zones where resources are either protected against any extractive use, utilization zones where sustainable harvesting is permitted and zones requiring intervention i.e. replantation and rehabilitation, iii) increased awareness and active participation of the communities and other stakeholders in the management of the Mombasa County Mangrove forest and iv) improved scientific knowledge of coastal areas that are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and other environmental threats and recommendations for management interventions. The projected project cost is US$ 70,000 with funding request from GEF equivalent to US $ 43,012 with Proposing organizations and community contributions equivalent US$ 26,988 to community mobilization programs, development of the mangrove forest participatory management plan and awareness and dissemination programs.
