Environmental policy and administrative management

After Soviet Union collapse livestock is mostly privately owned (about 70%). In Koilyk village it is too expensive for private owners of small number of livestock to graze their folks on distant pastures. Thus livestock is grazing over and over on the same lands that leads to land degradation, pasture biodiversity depletion and livestock exhaustion. Underfeed cow gives less milk; weeds invading pastures produce barbs, which makes sheep wool unsuitable for further use. People receive less income and to increase it they expand number of livestock heads, without solving the root problems. Koilyk rural district is bordering future Specially Protected Aria Zhetysu Alatau, where wild apples and peaches grow. But it is not SPA yet and grazing livestock berry risks of agro biodiversity depletion in that area. Project aim: The project aims at creation of sustainable management system and efficient use of pasture and hayland territories of Koilyk rural area Project tasks: - Improvement of the existing management system and creation of the efficient and sustainable use of haylands - Restoration of natural vegetation of pastures and the establishment of forage production - Promotion and awareness raising activities on efficient methods of combating land degradation and sustainable use of haylands Project results: - Amount of restored pastures 1050 ha from first 3 stages within the project - Amount of remote pastures in use 6000 ha - Amount of created sowing lands 2000 ha - Organized 3 seed-growing nurseries 3 grounds 20 ha each - Restored 15 water sources for pastures watering - Increased liveweight gain, yield of milk, wool
