In Wadi Rum area, known for its unique natural, aesthetic and demographic characteristics, the GEF SGP is supporting a cluster of projects aiming at building the capacities of local CBOs, supporting models for alternative livelihood strategies, introducing new technologies that would contribute to the conservation of the special ecosystem of the area, and enhancing the impacts of previous GEF SGP supported interventions there. Developing these projects was achieved through a strategic partnership with the USAID-funded SIYAHA Project, currently operating in Wadi Rum, and the IUCN Regional Office/ Amman. The project aims at improving the quality of tourism services provided in the villages surrounding Disi, and fostering cooperation between partners, through adopting alternative energy techniques and training the concerned people in the different campsites on using, maintaining and promoting such techniques. The project will specifically seek to achieve the following: 1.Build and develop the capacities of technical specialists operating the 12 desert campsites in Disi. 2.Enhance level of services in the campsites and in particular to make use of alternative energy sources. 3.Apply minimum requirements of public safety standards in campsites. 4.Foster cooperation between partners and stakeholders to accomplish necessary conditions that meet desert camping needs in Wadi Rum.
