Project Description
South Pentecost s Land and Environment have provided sustenance and shelter to the people and animals of south Pentecost thousands of years. The spiritual and emotional links between the people and the environment, fish, birds, trees, animals and the creatures are deep and strong, and most traditional cultures recognize this reciprocal relationship and consider each generation to be the custodians of natural resources, with an obligation to ensure that their benefits are passed on to future generations. This is a great strength, but today, for communities all over south Pentecost, the traditional respect, caring and the mutually supportive relationship between people, water, fish, birds, trees, animals and the environment is starting to come under threat as the lure of short- term benefit confronts long term concerns for the preservation and conservations of the environment With the increasing population and the development for cash economy had shifted the traditional lifestyle on Pentecost to become some detriment to the environment. South Pentecost is facing and challenged by the situation of unsustainable use of forests as extractive clearing for Agriculture and economy that results in destroying river source, river catchments, breeding sites of animals and birds and yet no one is talking about it as everyone seem to accept the changes as normal and way of life. Some communities had faced decrease in surface running water for their taro irrigation, a threat to local food production.
