The Maskelynes Islands have extensive coral reef areas and where some parts are protected under the traditional management system. the pristine environmental ecosystem and the good achorage wihtin the islands had brought increase interest of yaughts. The proposed project intends to prevent damage to the reefs of the Maskelynes Islands from two major threats; coral damage caused by anchoring yachts and coral damage caused by crown of thorns starfish. By addressing the above mentioned environmental problems the project also intends to enhance tourism in the Maskelyne Islands. The project intends to construct three yacht moorings in the bay of Avohk Island to offer visiting yachts safe and secure moorings that do not require anchoring and do not compromise the coral reefs. The project also intends to facilitate a multi day crown of thorns cleanup campaign, to be carried out by the Maskelyne islanders on the extensive areas of coral reef that surround the islands. Information drawn from the project will help to provide information to addressing coral reef protection from predation and destructives threats such as yaughtingxs.
