Project Description
The Ono-i-Lau island cluster is perhaps the most isolated area in Fiji. It has a high biological value as it harbors a wide array of marine habitats and ecosystems as well as being a significant area for seeding for Tridacna derasa (one of the recorded five and remaining three species of Giant Clams in Fiji) and a foraging site for three turtle species. The project will enable the development of a participatory community management programme that will enhance local stakeholder capacity on Ono-i-Lau to initiate the implementation of their community marine reserves through an integrated community natural resource and development management plan. The intention of this management plan and community management implementing system should facilitate: a) the reduction of negative impacts and better protection on the areas local fisheries and biodiversity that support community subsistence, and b) the development of long term sustainable alternative income livelihoods for the site community.
