Project Description
The manatee species is recognized worldwide as an endangered species and this rarity makes it highly prized economically. This mammal is a gentle giant now exposed to increasing threats from tourism, boating, habitat loss and other harassments. SCWS has emerged as a popular tour stop for visitors to view the manatee in its natural habitat. With this increase in visitation, FOSC has identified the critical need for site management measures, data collection, education of users and the public about manatees and acceptable human interaction, and measures for financial sustainability. Currently, the minimal and ad-hoc volunteer management measures at the sanctuary are inadequate. Tourist visitation to the site has increased resulting in overcrowding, speeding, manatee harassment, smoke and noise pollution, making the site an unpleasant visitor experience and, more important, inhospitable to the manatee. At this time, there is an absence of critical user information but the anecdotal reports of irregularities and deterioration are increasing. The objectives of the project are: 1. To introduce management measures and personnel at Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary; 2. To install basic infrastructure and obtain equipment necessary for the acceptable management of Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary; 3. To enhance community awareness of and involvement in SCWS management and 4. To institute and responsibly manage one new financing mechanism, the entry fee.
