German Technical Cooperation Tender notice For Expert support for the assessment of the greenhouse gas mitigation potential of the nitric acid sector in India

GIZ seeks to conduct a study on the Indian nitric acid sector. This subject area is of high relevance as India has shifted from a dependence on imports of nitric acid towards increased production. Nitric acid (HNO3) is primarily used in the manufacture of fertilisers and thus, the market is mainly driven by the growth of the fertiliser industry. The colourless liquid is further used in the production of explosives, dye intermediates and various organic chemicals. While carbon dioxide (CO2) is generated mainly when heating the boilers (fuel emissions), the production process (process emissions) also generates nitrous oxide (N2O). Even though the concentration is smaller than the one of CO2, N20 is a much more effective greenhouse gas with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 310 over a 100-years-span. Eight CDM projects in the area of N2O abatement have been registered in India so far. Scope 1 emissions seem of major relevance, yet studying Scope 2 emissions will be required as well.

This subject area is of high importance in India as high crop yields are necessary to meet the food demand of the rising population which boosts the fertiliser use and corresponding nitric acid industry. Since an increasing number of manufacturers in the Indian chemical processing industry take up the production of nitric acid and overall production is expected to increase, tackling the emission of the greenhouse gases N2O and CO2 is key.

The objective of this exercise is to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the status quo of the nitric acid sector in India, prepare scenarios on GHG mitigation potential and recommend key findings regarding the GHG abatement potential in the nitric acid sector in India.
